From the Sheridan VA Health Care System Director

The Sheridan VA Health Care System is implementing the national Veterans Health Administration Directive 1085, Smoke-Free Policy for Patients, Visitors, Contractors, Volunteers, and Vendors at VA Health Care Facilities. We are also simultaneously implementing the national Veterans Health Administration Directive 1085.01, Smoke-Free Policy for Employees. With the implementation of these directives, we will be changing our smoking policy to further our commitment in providing a safe and healthy environment for patients, visitors, vendors, volunteers, contractors and employees.

Besides the health impact on the smoker, there is currently overwhelming evidence that smoking and exposure to secondhand smoke creates significant medical risks, and a growing body of evidence that exposure to thirdhand smoke creates additional risks to safety.

Therefore, effective October 1, 2019, smoking will no longer be permitted on VA property for patients, visitors, contractors, volunteers, vendors and employees.

The policy covers all smoking material including, but not limited to:

  • Cigarettes
  • Cigars
  • Pipes
  • Any other combustion of tobacco
  • Electronic or e-cigarettes, vape pens, or e-cigars

This policy is comprehensive—for the Sheridan VA Medical Center campus this includes no smoking in any vehicle on the property, including those personally owned. For Community Based Outpatient Clinics, the policy varies slightly with the location, based on the space the clinic occupies. Clinic staff will have the specifics if you have questions.

Patients, visitors, contractors, volunteers, vendors, and employees are strongly encouraged to leave all smoking materials at home. To reduce the risk of ignition near oxygen or other flammable gases used in our facilities, some areas may require materials to be stored during their visit.

The Sheridan VA Health Care System offers smoking cessation services for Veterans. If you would like more information about smoking cessation, please contact your PACT team for assistance.

Thank you for serving our country and allowing us to care for you.

Sincerely,
Pamela S. Crowell, MPA
SVAHCS Director
